Hot on the heels of the rumor that Apple will be increasing virtualization to allow for Windows Vista comes the announcement that Leopard will be delayed from the original ship date of June to a new date of October. What does this all mean? The new virtualization technology is code named Chameleon according to rumors. This would allow Boot Camp to boot straight into Windows Vista. Others contend that this is not so.

Apple has publicly stated that the real reason is that they are attempting to get the iPhone to customers. This is plausible on the outside, but rings a little hollow. Apple has spent two years on the iPhone. Cingular spent an unknown amount of time upgrading its systems.

Add to the mix that there are reports of people getting emails from Apple asking them to consider it as the platform for their business - based on the purchase of Parallels, a virtualization product.

Consider also that many developers want API access to the virtualization framework.

What does it all really mean? As I say there is a lot of speculation, a lot of rumors, and I guess only those at 1 Infinite Loop Drive know the answers.

I look forward to October. It will be one interesting month.
